Taipans grant Rob Edwards early release

Edwards made his final NBL appearance last night against the New Zealand Breakers, putting up 14 points before being rested in the fourth quarter. He will miss the Taipans’ final two games of the 2024-25 season.
"We sat Rob when we found ourselves down 21 [in the fourth] because Rob is going to be moving on to a situation that is very financially benefitting for him.
“It's sad to see him go, but right now we're going to do a send-off for him while we're in New Zealand,” explained Taipans Head Coach Adam Forde post-game.
"The reality was that we've had guys in and out through illness this week, and Rob has got a great situation that we celebrate with him. We're looking forward to him getting this moment in his career.
"He was really torn about it and if anything, probably needed my support to wish him well on the journey.”
The 28-year-old will complete his debut NBL season with an average of 19.8 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists across 26 games.
Discussions with Edwards’ agent and the club began late last week, and Edwards acknowledged the Taipans Board and front office for their swift negotiations to facilitate his early release.
“I didn’t want to go out like this, but this is a life-changing offer for me and I’m grateful to the club for allowing me to take it. I know the timing isn’t ideal, but it was now or never. I’ve loved Cairns, I’ve got great memories and I’m sad to leave,” he said.
The Kenfrost Homes Cairns Taipans will host the Brisbane Bullets (Thursday) before travelling to Tasmania (Saturday) for Round 20 to conclude their 2024-25 NBL campaign.
